GURU PURNIMA MESSAGE OF SHRI C. B. SATPATHY

History has shown that the Divine Incarnations (Avataras), Perfect Masters (Sadgurus) and other spiritual personalities are capable of bringing about great and long term social changes at different places and at different times on this earth. Some of them like Lord Buddha, Lord Christ, Prophet Mohammad and Guru Nanak also created new religions. Others have shown new paths for betterment of the human race and spiritual evolution of the souls coming into contact with them. When they carry on their Divine and universal duties as ordained by God the Almighty they are automatically supported by the mighty and unseen powers of nature.
The possession and use of such powers is natural to them. These powers are far superior in nature to the powers that all others species, including human beings, possess. These are called 'Divya' (Divine) powers. From the word 'Divya' comes the words 'Devata' in Hinduism. While working in a human form these spiritual entities display the powers and characteristics of both human beings and Devatas as per their will and requirement. Just as the human beings have superior power and intelligence over all the other species on this earth, so also these powerful divine personalities possess superior intelligence and vast capabilities much beyond the capabilities of human beings.
As a man does not always have to think that he knows veterinary or medical science when treating an animal, similarly these Masters are not aware of their divine powers when they are helping or treating human beings and other species whether in their worldly problems or in their spiritual evolution. They use these powers spontaneously for the benefit of others without expecting any material returns. It is their magnificent quality of kindness that propels them to help others and suffer for them. On the other hand, human beings, when they come face-to-face with such mighty personalities are utterly surprised and moved to see the miraculous play of spiritual powers.
Further, the kindness with which Masters use these powers for their benefit brings forth an emotional upsurge in their hearts. This is beginning point of Bhakti. This is what used to happen to anyone and everyone who came in contact with Shri Shirdi Sai Baba when He was in His human embodiment at Shirdi. Baba's capabilities to give immediate and long-term redress to any problem of any person (both temporal and spiritual) was so vast and effective, that even the most powerful and capable personalities of that time like Khaparde, Buti, Kaka Saheb Dixit, Chandorkar etc. looked insignificant before Him.
Forgetting their material or social status they had to surrender to Him. Being totally overpowered by the personality of Shri Sai Nath Maharaj and deeply indebted to Him for His kindness, these devotees used to spread His glory. They spread the name of Baba mostly through word of mouth and through varied social interactions, whenever they got a chance to do so. Ardent devotees like Dasganu Maharaj spread His name in the rural areas of Maharashtra through kirtans, ballards and folklores.
During the period when Baba was at Shirdi (between 1860-1918), there were a very small number of newspapers and journals in Maharashtra. Study of such newspapers and magazines shows that during that time, Baba's name rarely appeared in them. After Baba left His body in 1918 “Sai Leela” an official publication (magazine) of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan came to life and this continues to be published till today. The prominent devotees of Baba like Dasganu, Chandorkar, Kaka Saheb Dixit and many others who were instrumental in spreading the name of Baba were extremely cautious and truthful in uttering or writing anything pertaining to Baba.
The two magazines, Sai Prabha (1915-1919) and Shri Sai Leela (1923 till date) were not commercial ventures. Neither the publishers, nor the editors or the writers had any commercial angle attached to it. It was out of pure love towards Baba and the real life experience they had with Him, that they wrote on their experiences in these magazines for the benefit of other devotees. They did not brag about the information they shared with others or their proximity to Baba. They did not write about any imaginary / concocted miracles. They did not indulge in bringing out competitive marketing serials based on half baked truths or speculations on Baba, as is sometimes being done in audio/video channels of today.
Today nine decades after Baba's Mahasamadhi, His name continues to spread far and wide in India and abroad. As Baba had forecast, Shirdi is thronging with devotees from all over the globe and the number is ever on the increase. Hundreds of temples have come up in His name in India and abroad. The number of commercial movies, TV serials, magazines, books, audio-video cassettes pertaining to Baba in different languages is too numerous to be listed. Stories on Baba's life, news and views on activities pertaining to the Sai movement today and experiences of devotees can be seen through these audio/video/print medias. Some of them are good.
However, what is sometimes lacking is a truthful and correct projection of Baba. Some people are perhaps not aware of the fact that a real Spiritual Master like Baba does not need a purely commercial venture to attract His devotees towards Him. By their subtle divine power, Spiritual Masters can draw any soul from any distance by their sheer will. This is what used to happen at Shirdi during Baba's time. Baba has clearly mentioned that He can draw His devotees even from beyond the seven seas whenever He willed. A true devotee who has full faith in Baba would avoid projecting Baba through imaginary or concocted stories of miracles. Such false projections sends a wrong message to the devotees and works as a hindrance in their correct appreciation of the personality of the Master, His philosophy and His teaching methods.
On this day of Guru Poornima the devotees should pray the Master to give them the correct emotional and mental capabilities to understand Him through their inner perception. The devotees should not condition their mind through whatever they read, see and hear superficially but should read Shri Sai Sat Charitra regularly and concentrate
on the divine attributes (qualities) of Baba and meditate on His form.

The bridge (or should it be called tunnel) goes under water to allow movement of ships. In order for ships to pass, this bridge is half under the water. You drive down in the water and then come out on the other side. Truly a marvelous piece of engineering! This bridge is between Sweden and Denmark . The picture was taken from the Sweden side.

SAI RAM

FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE
……“The religious and spiritual works of Hinduism have produced an unimaginable body of books, treatise, scriptures and other similar texts. Carried away from the distant past are the most profound religious scriptures like the Vedas, Brahamanas, Puranas, Samhitas, Upanishads, Shrimad Bhagwata Mahapurana (which contains the 'Gita' etc.) and many more too numerous to be listed here. A study of these works, written primarily in Sanskrit or in other vernaculars, leads one to experience a sense of expansion in one's knowledge, imagination and consciousness.
From an academic point of view, these valuable texts teach spiritual philosophies, spiritual theories and spiritual sciences. These in their quintessence propound certain vital aspects of the spiritual realms. Understanding philosophy and theory is the first step for a spiritual practitioner. However, it needs to be clearly understood that a mere study of spiritual and philosophical discourses is not enough.
Any knowledge, which is not put into practice, shall not be of much use as the path of spiritual progress calls for direct experience and knowledge. So it is necessary for the spiritual practitioners to graduate to practicing the applied aspect of spiritual science. Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Gyana Yoga, Laya Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga and tantras etc. are the applied principles.
How does one achieve spirituality? As mentioned before, merely by reading spiritual or religious texts one cannot spiritualise oneself. In its generic sense, the word 'spirit' means an indestructible divine energy form whose continued and unlimited play, sets into motion a series of changes in all forms of existence including human beings, starting before his birth and going beyond his death.
Different people understand the word 'spirit' differently. Some term it as 'jiva' (living entity), some term it as 'prana' (life force in the living being), some call it as 'chetna' (divine consciousness) or 'atma' (a part of the ultimate reality called God or Brahama). These four words, jiva, prana, atma and chetna are intrinsically related. However, 'atma' is primordial causative factor, of chetna, jiva or prana. In a way it can be said that, a continued consciousness beyond time and space is the very nature of the 'atman'.
'Atma' and 'paramatma' are the essence of the divine creation, 'ultimate realities' beyond time and space. The cosmos is nothing but the external manifestation of the 'paramatma'. Therefore, each created object contains a subtle and small part of the 'paramatma' termed as the 'atma'. Since 'atma' is a part of 'paramatma' it contains all the attributes of the 'paramatma'. It is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent in an unfathomable time continnum.
So then what is God realization? The word 'atma sakshatakara' (God realization) means, realisation of one's own 'atma' or consciousness. Even though these particles of 'paramatma' called 'atma' may be functioning in a 'Jiva' it is never separate from its root, that is 'paramatama'. Therefore, the realization of God is not the understanding of the material manifestation of 'atma', which includes all the living and non-living, visible and non visible things and forces of the Universe. Even if one can travel to all the Universes in space and gain knowledge about it he cannot have said to have realized God.
Consciousness in its various forms seen on the earth emanates from 'atma' or soul or 'paramatma'. All forms of energy in the Universe emanate from consciousness, and all forms of materials emanate from those energies. Thus, consciousness is superior to energy forms and materials of the Universe. Whereas consciousness can explain and control all energy forms and materials, however, the reverse cannot be true. Therefore, all religious worships of all deities in any form may not necessarily spiritualise a man.
Any experiment in the spiritual science, means expansion of his own limited consciousness to the State of Universal Consciousness. That science by which consciousness can thus be evolved is called 'vigyana maya jagata' or spiritual science. To achieve this he has to introspect (dhyana) on his own conduct and thought processes continuously. Idol worship, mantras and rituals are prescribed procedures at the beginning to purify oneself. Once the mind is purified through the control of senses the consciousness slowly starts expanding. There is no short-cut to this.
If one studies Sri Sai Satcharitra, one would find that the actions of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba reflected this Universal Consciousness. To evolve spiritually, we should therefore try to follow his precepts and conduct in letter and spirit.”…….
FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI

……“The first point to notice is that Baba did not force pace of spiritual advancement in this visitor’s case any more than in others’ cases. Baba would have had excellent reasons to immediately promote Khaparde’s spiritual interests because Khaparde had been in one of his previous janmas a fellow pupil along with Baba under the same Guru. In another janma he had been a member of the same family with Baba, having sufficient to live upon but still, being impelled by high ambition, Khaparde had chosen to leave the family and seek royal service in order to advance his economic or other position.
This just gives a hint that ambition was deep in the nature of Khaparde not only in the 19th century birth but in previous births as well. Such a person would have had excellent help for striving high up in the spiritual line. Yet Baba did not force the pace. He allowed him to take his own time and adopt his own ways for his spiritual amelioration. Like 95 percent of the orthodox religious people, Khaparde also had his religious convictions and ideas of spiritual improvement.
Therefore, he went on with his prayers, attendance at bhajans, and study of Panchadasi, Paramamrita, Yoga Vasishta, and Dasa Bodha. These no doubt have their value, but most of the orthodox people make the study of these and the adoption of the other programmes mentioned above, the be-all and end-all of religion. They stop all their spiritual practices with these. In Sai's course these formed a very minor item in one's spiritual advancement. The main thing is to surrender to the Guru whole heartedly and be at his mercy for everything, depending upon the Guru for everything and treating him as the all-in-all of the sadhaka.
Khaparde was certainly not prepared to make such surrender. In fact the two great essentials for a sadhaka are Nishta and Saburi, that is, full faith in the Guru and a readiness to wait long, very, long for seeing the benefits. Baba had adopted that course himself and had given Nishta and Saburi, to his own Guru. As for Khaparde, he was not prepared with full Nishta, that is, full faith in his Guru. He maintained his old line of thought, that is, great attachment to wealth, comfort, name, position and a slight veneer of religiosity combined with respectable life as quite sufficient for his purpose.
With such a mentality, one could not expect any great advance in his spiritual condition. Sai Baba did not force the pace and make him surrender all that. Sai knew or had ordained the subsequent life of Khaparde after releasing him from the immediate danger of prosecution, namely that his ambitions and energies were to be all utilised in totally different fields and his greatness was to consist in becoming an M.L.C. and the father of a Minister of the Central Provinces. All that Khaparde achieved. No doubt he has made a fairly good advance in religion as understood by him.
However great that advance may be, especially from his own standpoint, that advance cannot be treated as an advance from Sai' s viewpoint. Any Sai sishya would see that all that is insignificant and amounts to practically nothing when compared with what Sai could achieve for him had he surrendered himself to Sai. But in the case of Khaparde he was very far from attempting the Sai view-point.
Humility and a readiness for poverty were the pre-requisites for one to benefit by contacting a Samartha Sadguru. Khaparde notes that when his wife massaged the feet of Baba, the latter said that Dixit should give Rs.200/- to her. This at once mortified Khaparde. His pride felt wounded at the idea that he, a practicing lawyer, should be thought so low as to make his wife receive Rs.200/- from a Bombay lawyer like Dixit, though funds were indeed very low and he badly required Rs.200/- or more. Later he understood that Rs.200/- was only symbolical, that it meant to show Dixit's achievements of poverty and patience or contentmart with his poor lot. Khaparde rebelled at this idea also.
He did not want poverty. He did not go to Shirdi to remain poor forever. On the other hand he wanted to amass wealth and attain high position and Sai was his cat' s paw to get at the desired things. Khaparde never forgot that he was an Honorable Member of the Council and had 'visited England, was high up in politics and looked up to by all and sundry as a great social and political leader and a highly learned scholar who could even teach Panchadasi to Upasani and others.
The diary frequently mentions that his position was all-in-all in his eyes and when others came to Shirdi, he was an institution to be visited by them just as they visited Baba. He spent his time in talks with such visitors, and in his study of the dairy papers, to note especially what happened in the world generally, perhaps with special reference to his own condition and the possibilities of his own delicate position getting more delicate and more dangerous.
A psycho-analyst studying the diary would at once declare the mentality displayed in the diary is almost the antipodes of what the mentality of a sadhaka like Dixit should be and was. Dixit made considerable advance and, as Khaparde notes, turned over a new leaf, and on his face there was a visible calm due to his internal peace. He notes the same in the case of Bala Saheb Bhate, a retired Mamlatdar, who had the same calm on his face, though he had forsaken the lucrative office of a Mamlatdar, without anything to fall back upon.
Yet he was able to achieve great calm. These are the exact opposites of Khaparde. Baba's dealing with such a person on the spiritual side is highly interesting. In some matters Khaparde's moral and spiritual condition was far from being satisfactory, and it was known to Baba. Of course, this should not be discussed either in the diary or in this biography, but there is sufficient hint given of that position in Baba's dealings with him as mentioned in the diary. Khaparde notes that Baba gave him advice in a fatherly way, keeping Khaparde alone for giving that advice.
To show him that at the age of 58 he should no longer be thinking of sex gratification, Baba gently gives a hint by calling his wife Ajibai, meaning an old lady. Khaparde unable to take the same viewpoint mentions the same in the diary regarding it as some¬thing unintelligible whereas for one who is able to read between the lines and note what is behind the scenes and what was to happen later on, it is clear that Baba was pressing the button just at the proper point and gave a valuable suggestion.
Again as to the possibility of further progress, especially in the matter of reaching God, that is realising Satchitananda, nothing could be done in dealing with a sadhaka in Khaparde's condition unless he should thoroughly submit himself to Baba's rigorous discipline. Yet what did Baba do? Did he give up the task as hopeless? Certainly not. To Baba nothing is hopeless. Khaparde could work at reaching Satchitananda, but not at that time nor perhaps in that life. So, he eggs him on to great efforts in that noble direction.
He gives him a Pisgah-sight of that promised land. He favours with a few Yogic glances off and on, the effect of these Yogic glances being to immerse Khaparde deep in a pool of bliss without any external visible stimulus whatever. Khaparde' s joys in getting a fat sessions case or success in a sensational trial or getting loud plaudits or cheers from the mass listening to his humorous and highly cutting comments and also his domestic joys were perhaps the highest that he had experience of.
Till he came to Sai all his joys evidently were joys due to external causes, but when Baba's glances came, without any external stimulus, without any fee, or birth of a grandchild or applause he felt waves of joy swallowing up his being for hours. This is an indication that the soul has vast resources of the highest sort of bliss independent of external stimuli.
This is a very valuable spur to one at working hard and proceed to realise Parabrahma or Satchitananda, which would give him joy and peace without any external cause forever. This is one of the valuable spiritual services rendered to Khaparde by Sri Sai. There may be one or two more of that sort noticeable in the diary but perhaps in this article unconsciously the dissection of Khaparde has gone to unpardonable lengths, and it is high time that such dissection stopped.
A careful reader of his diary might light upon the other point not mentioned here, that is, points in which Sai Baba analysed his character and promoted the chance of his reaching a high spiritual state and reaching God or Satchitananda.”……
DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE

I was suffering from deception, material losses, betrayal and physical assault. The expected outcome was depression, very high sugar levels and severe diabetic condition with a reading of 460-75. I suffered because that was karmic. My secretary even presented me with Sai Satcharita - but my sanskaras perhaps prevented me from reading it. But His grace and blessings had to lead me to it. Finally when the situation became desperate with court cases and police stations, losing properties in the court and I was left without even a house to stay in, I took shelter in a government quarter. Then one day a friend suggested that I visit the Sai temple and read Satcharita. I read it in a saptaah. Then I read it in one day. Then someone suggested I read Gurucharita. I read that too. Each story and chapter was a revealing lesson to me. I learnt a lot. Meanwhile, my health improved. Earlier I could not walk and found it very painful to stand up after squatting for a while. I was detected with cancer in both breasts. I did parikramas. The next scan projected an arrest - status quo. My health improved. My daughter secured a seat in medical school. I received the promotion that was denied to me for 23 years. One of my research articles caught the attention of the Prime Minister’s staff and I received appreciation.
Even now I get depressed because the forces that are creating difficulties are so many, but I chant the name of Sai - consciously and sub-consciously every waking minute of the day. He has finally, after testing me for years, willed so much progress in a span of three years. He will right every wrong done to me by fellow men and women. I have found the beauty of his omnipresence even in China - when I wondered when I can see a champa flower. When I returned - the first Thursday after I returned, the priest at the temple gave me a champa flower from His lotus feet. He is there when I seek Him. Without Him I would have perished.
My only worry - this morning in chapter 16 of Sri Gurucharitra, I have read about the duties of a woman. I see that only women have responsibilities and duties. Men do not. No matter what husbands may do wives must tolerate and have forbearance and patience. I have been married for 24 years. From day one I was exploited, abused, taunted, maligned, and beaten up. I had to bring up my two children with little or no support from my husband. He has neglected the children too. I have never neglected my duties as a daughter in law. They were my responsibility and I served them with pleasure. I cannot even repeat some of the things said to me. I have paid up his debts. All this is possible by Sai's Grace. But as a mortal I always craved for a little concern - some affection - it has never come through. I am working and therefore financially not on the road. But in similar situations, women who are not educated, not employed, have to find other ways. Why should they not remarry so someone better can take care of them? I know shaastras say something different. They were written when the world was not so materially oriented. Now everything is money based. So employment is important. If the husband cannot support should the wife commit suicide? What about the children? I feel strongly that some system be evolved to make life more secure for women and children and old parents.
Some of my doubts and questions are answered soon and some after a long time. But no query goes unanswered. I am developing
